Apparel Brands Stand By Bangladesh

Low-cost labor is certainly a key factor in choosing a supplier for manufacturing garments. But don’t discount other concerns that can affect your quality and deliverability, like labor productivity and infrastructure development. Exporters and suppliers, manufacturing of polo shirts, knitted polo shirts, mens pullovers, mens garments, gents shirts, gents pants, mens casual shirts, mens t-shirts, ladies sweater, cardigan, popover, shirt, t shirts, woven shirts. Eight years on, garment workers are still losing their lives while making our clothes. In November 2020, 12 people were killed in an explosion at a garment factory in Gujarat, India. In March this year, 20 people were killed and dozens left injured after a fire tore through a clothing factory in Cairo, Egypt, with a further eight killed and 29 injured when a 10-storey building collapsed in the same city later that month.
But there are no provisions or procedures in the law that require the DOL to investigate allegations of unfair labor practices, leaving follow-up on complaints entirely within the discretion of the DOL. The Bangladesh Department of Labor , within the Ministry of Labor and Employment is responsible for dealing with trade unions, but it is hampered by a lack of political will, capacity, and enforcement power. In signing the office uniform for ladies November 2014 memorandum of understanding, the owners agreed that workers would henceforth “be able to join any union of their choice,” and would not face discrimination for joining a union. For example, following the attack on four members of the Bangladesh Federation for Workers Solidarity who were helping workers at Chunji Knit organize a union, managers filed a criminal case against them and 45 factory employees.

In January 2014, the Rana Plaza Donors Trust Fund, chaired by the ILO, was set up. Currently, Bangladesh has more than 5,000 factories working in the textile sector that employ almost 4 million people every year. With agriculture as the country’s primary employment, Bangladesh started to grow as a more significant garment exporter country when the focus shifted to the export industry. In 2012, Bangladesh’s textile industry made up to 79% of the country’s export income and by the end of 2021; Bangladesh plans to achieve a target of apparel exports worth $50 billion. This private and independent initiative seeks to impose legally binding safety, building and fire enforcement standards on all garment manufacturers in Bangladesh.
Ready-made garments represented 77 percent of all exports from Bangladesh in 2011, and exports as a whole made up almost a quarter of the country’s gross domestic product. Once an item is purchased, contact the manufacturer or supplier and place the order with them. This will help you to validate your decision to work with them while building your business relationship – which is essential in a long-term partnership. Work with the manufacturer that has solid experience and good reviews from other store owners.
Additionally, three separate initiatives to inspect the factories for safety are underway. The second initiative, the Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety, is inspecting and overseeing improvements in 587 factories. The Alliance is a group of 26 North American retailers, including Walmart and Gap. Finally, the government’s own inspectors, supported by the ILO and funded by the EU, are inspecting and overseeing improvements in the remaining factories, which number about 1,500. Although the government increased the minimum wage in late 2013, Bangladesh has historically paid its garment workers less than its major competitors, and has a record of poor industrial relations. Many international retailers have paid into the fund, including some that did not do business with the Rana Plaza factories. Other retailers connected to Rana Plaza, however, have not donated at all, or donated relatively small sums.

After South Korea had exhausted its export limits to the US under the MFA, it began looking for a global partner in order to continue producing garments for the West. Bangladesh, then a brand-new country with crushing poverty and little infrastructure, was searching for a way to jumpstart its development. On the one hand, a lack of reform could lead to another disaster like those seen at Tazreen and Rana Plaza, which could result in Western brands fleeing en masse.
They also explained that some employees caused unrest and damaged property making illegal demands in July 2014 and that after investigations the management suspended the culprits. After the union at a factory in Gazipur was registered in March 2013, four of its organizers and many other workers were fired.A union leader said he was fired in front of a local government official and member of the industrial police. Union leaders at EFE Textiles allege that in April 2014, they were threatened with violence by factory management and forced to resign. They say that they have been unable to find work apart from in a low-paid subcontractor factory, and suspect their names have been shared with other factory owners. Needless to say, union leaders are often among those who are dismissed during such purges of union members.

In November last year 112 workers died in the Tazreen Fashions factory fire. Human Rights Watch interview with two factory workers, Dhaka, June 24, 2014. We would like to specifically thank the country director, Alonzo Suson, and staff of Solidarity Center (AFL-CIO) in Bangladesh for assisting in our research.

British fashion retailer Boohoo has been growing quickly in the past decade. The brand seems to make many promises, but doesn’t do much to improve in the social and environmental spheres. With over 20 million followers on Instagram, Chinese brand Shein quickly became popular thanks to social media.
In April 2014, Human Rights Watch wrote to the companies that have not paid into the fund. Among those that replied, some said they have given money directly to NGOs or other groups supporting victims instead of the ILO-chaired fund. Others denied they were doing business with the Rana Plaza factories, or that suppliers had done so without permission.
